Furnace Festival Smelting School June 28-29th (Friday 27th optional)

Take part in the Derryfada Furnace Festival Smelting School. Learn how to turn natural iron ore into metallic iron using the same methods as the Celts, Romans and Vikings. €150 covers the 3 days tuition and self catering camping. This is part of a experimental archeology weekend, and will have a festival vibe (ie drunk blacksmiths singing till all hours).

Friday 27th (optional)

Arrive any time after 12, Trip to a local bog to learn how to identify, test and collect bog iron. set up camp and fireside talk on the Irish iron history with Dr Paul Rondelez

Saturday 28th:

working in teams of 4, Learn about different clay types and there effect on the smelt, process clay and build and pre heat your furnace.

Sunday 29th:

TIME TO SMELT SOME IRON!!!!! the day will be spent smelting iron and processing the iron bloom.
